All Hands on Deck – Publishing the Congressional Record

Title: All Hands on Deck – Publishing the Congressional Record

Speaker:

  • Ashley Dahlen, Outreach Librarian, U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO)

Description:

LSCM takes you on a behind-the-scenes tour of the tremendous amount of work involved in publishing the daily Congressional Record (CR) – the daily record of the floor proceedings of the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. To create this webcast, the chief Official Reporter of the Senate was interviewed, as were staff in several production units at GPO. Learn all about:

    • The work Official Reporters perform to transcribe, compile, and edit the CR
    • The work that GPO performs to format, proof, print, distribute, and upload the CR
    • The history of the Congressional Record and its predecessor publications
    • Page composition, offset printing presses, and digital authentication

Of particular interest are the photographs of GPO, from the basement to the 7th floor, as well as select images from our GPO photo archive.

Interesting keywords and phrases to listen for are “bowling,” “slugs,” “Pitman Shorthand,” “habitual falsifiers of debate,” “offset printing press,” “origami,” “McGinty,” “metadata,” and “Tholos.”
