Bibliographic Record Distribution to FDLP Libraries

In March 2009, the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) received funding from H.R. 1105, the Omnibus Appropriations Act of FY 2009 (Pub. L. 111-8). This law funds several important initiatives, including those of the Cataloging and Indexing Program (C & I). Among those initiatives is a project to enhance the services GPO provides to members of the FDLP and the public.

GPO has contracted with MARCIVE, Inc. for a pilot project for the FDLP. A small selection of Federal depository libraries will be recruited to participate in this pilot program in which GPO bibliographic records will be distributed from the Integrated Library System (ILS) to these libraries. The libraries, in turn, will use these records to populate their online catalogs, thus creating greater access to tangible documents in depository collections and electronic documents available from U.S. Government Web sites.

GPO’s goals for this project are to:

  • Implement a documented and well supported solution that interfaces with GPO’s systems (legacy and new) to ensure the automatic dissemination of bibliographic records to FDLP libraries.
  • Deliver bibliographic records that satisfy FDLP customer needs.
  • Provide automated communication mechanism to alert users of distributions.
  • Establish an automated delivery solution that works.
  • Establish and fully document a process to sustain the solution in conjunction with GPO’s operations.

Details of this pilot will be forthcoming, including information on how to participate. GPO staff are excited to bring this project to depositories, as this is another step in providing the public with enhanced access to Government information.
