govinfo API Test Records

As of July 1, 2019, Library Technical Services (LTS) has started to test the use of the govinfo API to obtain MODS records for newly-ingested hearings and to use a script to convert those records into preliminary MARC records. LTS staff will complete the records in OCLC and export them to the Catalog of U.S. Government Publications (CGP) according to standard procedures.

The major goals of the test are to:

  • Evaluate the utility and effectiveness of this process.
  • Repurpose existing metadata for the cataloging workflow.
  • Determine if LTS can gain savings of time and effort that staff could direct to the most challenging and demanding aspects of metadata work.
  • Expedite the procedures for creating MARC bibliographic records for new Congressional publications in OCLC and the CGP.

The test will be conducted for a period of approximately one month. The records generated through this process will include the following fields and data that are currently not entered in GPO bibliographic records for hearings:

  • 024 - GPO jacket number
    • The GPO identifier for each printing job
  • 500 - Access ID (govinfo)
    • The unique identifier in govinfo
  • 511 – Names of witnesses and their affiliations
  • 518 – Hearing date
