  • For over 170 years, the depository library at Ohio Wesleyan University has served the public with free access to U.S. Government information. The L.A. Beeghly Library and its long tradition of public service is the focus of the latest Depository Library Spotlight.

Ohio Wesleyan University is a liberal arts university located in Delaware, Ohio, near Columbus.  This private university enrolls more than 1,750 students from 46 states and 43 countries.

Ohio Wesleyan University opened its doors in November 1844. It is remarkable that just one year later, in 1845, the university took on the additional responsibility to collect and make freely available the publications of the U.S. Federal Government. From these beginnings, the L.A. Beeghly Library and its Federal depository collections and services have grown and evolved. Using communication tools such as a website based on LibGuides, the depository maintains and expands the use of Government information both in the university and statewide.

The depository serves a student population and the public with access to U.S. Government information. To meet the many needs of library users, a wide range of subject areas are selected, including Congressional, education, census, and labor. The library has over 152,000 tangible depository publications. They are located in a separate Government documents area on the 1st floor.

For the past 17 years, Joy Gao, the Public Services Librarian & Coordinator for Government Documents, has served as the Depository Coordinator for Government Information. Ms. Gao began working at the library in 1997 and has done an excellent job in managing the L.A. Beeghly Library’s depository collection.

The library is part of the CONSORT Colleges, a consortium of four academic libraries in Ohio: Denison University, Kenyon College, Ohio Wesleyan University, and The College of Wooster. These libraries have a shared catalog which allows users to access materials from all four campuses. In addition, the CONSORT libraries have an agreement in which they performed a collection consolidation in order to create one permanent collection for their users. The L.A. Beeghly Library is the library of record responsible for collecting, cataloging, and maintaining publications from the Department of Education, the Environmental Protection Agency, and Y1 Congressional publications. Through these efforts, all participating libraries were able to reduce the size of their collections while still being able to access the material and reduce staff hours.

Additionally, the library participates in the Ohio Library and Information Network or OhioLINK, an Ohio Academic Library Consortium that provides library users with access to nearly 50 million books. Depository publications at Ohio Wesleyan University can be accessed through OhioLINK, making their collection accessible to even more users throughout the state.

The U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) would like to thank the staff of Ohio Wesleyan University’s L.A. Beeghly Library for their continued commitment and service to the public.
