Partnership Showcase: Arthur Lakes Library, Colorado School of Mines

The Arthur Lakes Library at the Colorado School of Mines is both a Preservation Steward and a Cataloging & Metadata Partner.

In 2014, the Arthur Lakes Library began contributing bibliographic records for digital publications from several USGS series to the Catalog of U.S. Government Publications (CGP). GPO catalogers perform any needed NACO work, verify all the SuDoc numbers, and assign a PURL to those records.

As a result of this partnership, several thousand bibliographic records have been added to the CGP.

  • USGS Bulletins: 3,128 records (completed in April 2017)
  • USGS Professional Papers: 2,687 records (completed August 2018)
  • USGS Circulars: 519 records (ongoing)
  • USGS Water Supply Papers: 1,122 records (ongoing)

The Arthur Lakes Library also began serving as a Preservation Steward in July 2018. The library is preserving publications from the USGS, the Bureau of Mines, the Department of Energy, and the Energy Research and Development Agency (ERDA).

The library decided to become a Preservation Steward for several reasons. The library was already meeting many of the obligations of a Preservation Steward, particularly in terms of cataloging and collection care. Additionally, Karen Pfiffner, the Government Information Coordinator, says “I feel strongly that we received so much from GPO that's it's appropriate that we support you in return, and as a really small school it was a way that we could do so.” Becoming a Preservation Steward also increased the visibility of the collections and highlighted their importance.

The selection of agencies to preserve matches with the focus of the university as a STEM school. Karen Pfiffner says, “We are engineers (DOE/ERDA), geologists (USGS), environmentalists (USGS/USBM)….These agencies are the core of our collection.”

GPO thanks the Arthur Lakes Library at the Colorado School of Mines for all their contributions to the Federal depository library community.
