The University Libraries at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) is serving as a Preservation Steward for Senate and joint Congressional hearings that have a digital copy on FDsys/govinfo and are seven years or older. UNC will update the list of hearings under its stewardship annually. UNC’s Preservation Stewardship complements the stewardship of the George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida, which is preserving hearings from the House of Representatives.

Renée Bosman, Government Information Librarian, says the UNC libraries “decided to serve as a Preservation Steward in order to help our Regional colleagues take advantage of the increased flexibility granted by the Regional Discard Policy. The decision to select Senate and Joint Hearings was a natural one, as UNC is an ASERL Center of Excellence for Congressional hearings and we have already been inventorying and identifying preservation needs. We are thrilled to be partnering with the University of Florida, also a Center of Excellence for hearings, as we are able to utilize some of their best practices."

With the UNC as a Preservation Steward, there are now two geographically separated Congressional hearings collections under stewardship, the University of Colorado, Boulder and UNC/University of Florida collections. GPO encourages other libraries to consider serving as Preservation Stewards for all or parts of their Congressional hearings collections.

The University of Notre Dame Kresge Law Library is the first law library to serve as a Preservation Steward. The library is serving as a steward for the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). The CFR is the codification of general and permanent rules published in the Federal Register by Federal departments and agencies. It was first published in 1938. The library’s collection includes volumes from June 1938 through April 2017.

GPO thanks the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Notre Dame Kresge Law Library for taking on the important role of Preservation Steward. Consider joining these libraries and serving as a Preservation Steward for part or all of your depository collection. Visit FDLP.gov’s Partnership Page for details.
