Partnership Showcase: Mansfield Library at the University of Montana

This month we would like to spotlight GPO’s partnership with the Mansfield Library at the University of Montana (UM). This is the first cooperative cataloging-only partnership in which GPO has entered. With the strength of UM’s collection in Forest Service, the partnership will increase access to bibliographic records for pre-1976 and fugitive publications from the U.S. Forest Service. The UM Libraries have been working to retrospectively catalog their depository collection for a number of years. Under the partnership, the UM Libraries are sending the bibliographic records for publications in 13 Forest Service SuDoc class stems to GPO in batches. LSCM staff are then completing the processing of the records, which includes SuDoc/item number verification, Library of Congress Subject Heading (LSCH) assignment, and corporate name authority assigning.

We are working on the records in batches, and the first batch is now available in the CGP.

Examples of Aleph system numbers from this batch are:

  • 802053
  • 802055
  • 802061
  • 802065
  • 802066
  • 802068

As additional batches are received and completed, they will be available through the CGP and the Cataloging Record Distribution Project. The records will be identified with a 955 MARC field that will read “Cataloging Partner; University of Montana”.

The Mansfield Library became a Federal depository library in 1909 and the regional depository for Montana in 1965. The library has acquired and maintains more than a million books, maps, CD- and DVD-ROMs, and microforms produced by the Government. This includes older publications produced prior to the library becoming a depository.

Teressa Keenan, Government Documents Coordinator at Mansfield Library stated, “So far this partnership agreement seems like it will be a win-win situation for all involved, and we are very excited to be a part of it.” GPO is very grateful for the collaborative contribution made by UM Libraries to increase access to and visibility of historic U.S. Government publications through this new cataloging partnership.
