FDLP LibGuides from GPO: A Pilot Program

Beginning March 1, 2017, a pilot for Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) LibGuides was conducted to determine whether or not to provide library guides to the FDLP Community using Springshare’s LibGuides software.

The test consisted of nine volunteer librarians from the FDLP community and a project team from the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s (GPO’s) Library Services & Content Management (LSCM) unit.

Volunteers included librarians from academic and tribal libraries. The participants’ levels of experience were varied, as some of the volunteers’ institutions currently use Springshare LibGuides, others had basic experience using LibGuides, and some had no familiarity. Guides were created by LSCM staff and by volunteers from the community.

Volunteers were also able to request specific subjects that guides be created on.

Guides created by LSCM were both topical and instructional. These included:

Guides created by the FDLP community were linked from the FDLP pilot site and included a wide variety of topics.

The pilot ran for eight weeks, with feedback accepted throughout that time. A questionnaire was sent out at the end of the pilot to gather additional feedback from participants.

The results of the survey were encouraging. Volunteers reacted positively to most aspects of the pilot, but also provided recommendations and suggestions for improvement.

We are currently analyzing the pilot, and recommendations for future implementation will be made soon.
