Libraries are facing dramatic shifts due to technological advances, severe budget cuts, library reorganizations, and more. Some of these situations require immediate action on the part of the library. As libraries rethink their strategic plans, GPO understands that they necessarily evaluate their investment in collections and staff expertise dedicated to FDLP functions.

GPO is interested in making sure that the diverse communities served by depository libraries continue to have access to U.S. Government information under any circumstances. Our staff are available to discuss any issues or challenges your library may be facing. If you are at a library weighing the benefits of staying or leaving the FDLP or undergoing other major changes, please contact us and your regional library as soon as possible.

GPO and your regional library can offer suggestions and options to help your library participate in the Program and continue to meet the needs of your community. Each depository library has a unique depository operation and services model. Since GPO staff are familiar with all types of depository operations, we are able to share ideas that you may consider for your institution. The regional library may also be able to provide additional local-level insight into the situation, as well as identify other depository libraries that can work collaboratively with your institution to make the most use of limited resources and also maximize the impact of your library services.

Communication between libraries and GPO often results in a better understanding of the FDLP in today’s environment, information sharing about practical ways to manage depository collections and services under various circumstances, and a greater understanding of the impact of a library’s participation in the FDLP. Successful resolution to these challenges also often depends on quick action, close collaboration with other selectives throughout the state or region, and the responsible regional library.
