March 8 is International Women's Day and March is Women’s History Month. In the early part of the 20th century, most of GPO's female employees were bindery workers, but there were also female press feeders. After the First World War, Public Printer George H. Carter promoted several women to supervisory positions for the first time in the Agency's history. Since World War II, GPO had its first woman Director of Personnel, first woman Chief of Staff, first woman Superintendent of Documents, and first woman Public Printer.
