Miami University Libraries

The U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) is proud to spotlight the Miami University Libraries in Oxford, Ohio. This large academic library has a wonderful variety of information provided through their Government Information LibGuide and blog.

Their Government Information LibGuide contains a wide array of links to Federal Government resources and other information, including a summary of the mission of the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP). It also has the added bonus of having a pronunciation guide for GPO’s Federal Digital System, or FDsys - “pronounced F-D-sys.” The Libraries are also a depository for Ohio state government, United Nations, and European Union publications. Location information for print resources and online links found in online subject guides help guide people to these resources.

The News blog highlights fun and interesting topics like acquiring tax forms during tax season (with added information explaining where your tax money goes), Earth Day, and celebrating President’s Day by listing and linking to sites and memorials honoring U.S. Presidents that are in the nearby Oxford area. Not only the Depository Coordinator, but several other staff members post about Government information. Blog entries typically make use of Government and commercial resources, images, and may discuss resources available in various formats. Several blog entries refer to books, pamphlets, and maps in print, and they are referred to in such a way as to draw people into the library.

In 2009, the Libraries celebrated their 100th anniversary as a depository. Their celebration event featured a creative use of images from their digitized WWII posters and the FDLP eagle emblem. “Liberty Donuts” (called such because they were free) were also offered to event visitors.

Miami University Libraries selects over 68% of item numbers available through the FDLP. Their selections are driven largely by their Collection Development Policy. The policy outlines the community, U.S. Congressional District, course offerings on campus, information about OhioLINK’s resource sharing, format choices, and all sorts of procedures from processing to preserving depository materials. OhioLINK member libraries provide access to books and other library materials, electronic resource databases and journal articles, eBooks, images, videos, sounds, and theses and dissertations from Ohio students.

Gathering all information together can be difficult to do, but both the long-term development of the collection and sharing information with other staff to let them know what the depository collection has to offer for researchers makes it well worth the effort.

The depository coordinator is Jeffrey Hartsell-Gundy, the Government Information and Law Librarian and former GODORT of Ohio President. He can be seen at depository library conferences networking with other Government information specialists.

For all the work that the staff does to push Government information out to their researchers, and for all the fun that they have while doing it, GPO would like to shine a spotlight on the Miami University Libraries!
