The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is providing public access to the newly discovered audio tape recording of conversations between various individuals in Washington and Air Force One pilots and officials on board during the flight from Dallas to Andrews Air Force Base following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963.

Available on FDsys, this digitized version of the two hour and twenty-two minute recording was donated to the National Archives by the Raab Collection. The tapes were found among other papers and memorabilia of Army Gen. Chester “Ted” Clifton, Jr., who served as senior military aide to President Kennedy. The White House Communications Agency (WHCA) provided the tapes to Gen. Clifton. The conversations were captured by WHCA, which routed all phone calls and radio traffic. The recording includes references to new code names and incidents, among them are:

A private conversation by head of the Secret Service Jerry Behn about the disposition of the President’s body.

An expanded conversation about how to remove the President's body from the plane and where to take it.

An urgent effort by an aide to Air Force Chief of Staff Curtis LeMay to reach General Clifton; and attempts to locate various Congressmen from Texas.

The digitized recording is being made available electronically to Federal depository libraries on FDsys, under:

GPO Access PURL Modifications Complete

In January 2011, 42,163 PURLs were modified to change the target URLs to point from GPO Access to the FDsys equivalent; however, discrepancies were discovered in PURLs that originally pointed to http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/*. Consequently, in May 2011, the 41,952 PURLs that pointed to frwebgate resources were reverted back to their original targets while the situation was investigated.

That investigation is now complete and the 41,952 PURLs have been re-modified to point to the FDsys equivalent.

There are PURLs that link to single issues of serials. These PURLs will be modified in the future to point to the respective serial title’s browse page in order to provide access to the entire run. At present, however, the focus is on moving from GPO Access targets to FDsys equivalents. MARC records will be modified (e.g., 53x and 856 fields) as necessary as time permits.

We apologize for the delay and appreciate the community’s assistance in identifying the issue.

MetaLib Enhancements Now Feature Simultaneous Search of FDsys and CGP

images/stories/fdlpnews/cataloging/metalib-new-resources.png

As part of the U.S. Government Printing Office’s (GPO) ongoing efforts to expand the Federal database collection in MetaLib, users can now simultaneously search the Federal Digital System (FDsys) and the Catalog of U.S. Government Publications (CGP) through a single search box in MetaLib via the new predefined search set “GPO Resources”.

The ability to further refine search results has also been enhanced with the release of the “Resources” option. After searching the “GPO Resources” predefined search set, the “clusters and facets” module, available on the righthand column of the screen, allows users to narrow their search by categories, such as topics, dates, authors, and resources.

GPO is continually working to examine and test configurations of additional Federal databases for potential inclusion in our MetaLib implementation. Minor cosmetic changes will continue to be made to the MetaLib interface as needed.

In our continuing efforts to improve the usability of the Catalog of the U.S. Government Publications (CGP), the label for the "URL/PURL" search option in the dropdown box of the Advanced view of the CGP has recently been changed to "Internet Access". This revised label is shown in the column heading “Internet Access" in the CGP Brief View and in the Standard view of a search results list. The Expert Search Codes list on the CGP help page has also been updated to reflect this change.

There will be additional minor changes to the look of the CGP over the next few months in preparation for the pending sunset of GPO Access.

Partial Revert of Bulk Modified PURLs

In January 2011, the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) bulk modified PURLs to point from GPO Access to the FDsys equivalent since FDsys is GPO’s official system of record. Over the past few months, the library community has been reporting discrepancies with some new PURL target URLs pointing to FDsys. Consequently, GPO has reverted PURLs that originally pointed to GPO Access WAIS documents (http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/*) while we investigate the issue. Once the issues have been resolved, the PURLs will again be modified to point to the FDsys equivalent, and the community will be notified.

We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate the community’s assistance in identifying the issue.
